In this economy, it's only natural to seek out bargains. But like everything else in life, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Over the past few months, some media stories have advertised low-priced "Do it Yourself" Botox™ kits and "At Home" Laser Hair Removal products available on the Internet.
The risks of attempting even a moderately invasive cosmetic procedure like Botox at home far outweigh any short-term financial benefits. In fact, according to the federal Food and Drug Administration, "botulinum toxin products should be administered in an appropriate setting using sterile instruments. Malls, private homes, [hotel rooms, and conference rooms] are not medical environments and may be unsanitary."
Even for some devices approved by the FDA for home use, the results from a self-performed minimally invasive procedure like laser hair removal are not likely to meet your expectations—and there are still risks of burns and other complications.
Botox
Botox injections need to be properly prepared and administered. Qualified professionals have specific training in diluting the concentrated botulinum toxin correctly, injecting it into the proper muscles and ensuring the concentration of botulinum toxin is appropriate for the specific muscle they are injecting.
By performing a Botox injection by yourself or allowing an untrained person to do so, you run the following risks:
- Accidental injection of nearby muscle groups—resulting in unwanted results such as drooping eyelids or other facial distortions
- Infection
- Excess bruising at the injection site

Laser Hair Removal
When performed by a medical professional, laser hair removal is a minimally invasive and convenient way to remove unwanted hair, generally with very satisfying results. However, devices designed for use at home may be constructed of inferior components, are not suited for all skin and hair types or colors, and can lead to burns, discolored skin and even unsightly marks.
Trained laser hair removal professionals will assess the color of your skin and hair, and work with you to develop an action plan that will offer you the best chance of achieving the results you desire.
Any cosmetic medical procedure should be performed or overseen by a Board-certified plastic surgeon. Visiting a medical professional found in our Find a Surgeon tool ensures that the person performing your procedure has the training and experience to minimize the risks associated with cosmetic medical procedures.
